Basic Cadaveric USGRA Course

This eight-hour Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia workshop is a hands-on, basic training course utilizing cadavers and “live” scanning models, state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, Maverick Pulsatile pumps and techniques, and a comprehensive, highly-practical approach to regional anesthesia techniques for surgery and acute pain management.

Blocks that will be taught include: interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, axillary, distal upper and lower extremity salvage blocks, fascia iliaca, PENG, popliteal plexus, femoral, adductor canal, popliteal and TAP.

There will be pulsatile, cadaveric needling stations using the “Maverick Method” and “live,” side-by-side ultrasound scanning stations with fully dissected cadavers, as well as anatomic teaching by a Belmont University anatomist.

Participants will receive the benefits of small-group “live” scanning and needling stations, low faculty-to-attendee ratios, and an individualized learning plan that suits the attendee’s needs in regional anesthesia. Information presented will be highly practical and immediately useful to the attendee’s daily clinical practice.

Instructors: Christian Falyar, DNAP, CRNA, Director, MTSA Acute Surgical Pain Management Fellowship; Jason Crosslin MS, CRNA; Matthew Stewart MS, CRNA; and MTSA Fellows.

This program has been prior approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology for 8.00 Class A CE credits; Code Number 1039586; Expiration Date 3/20/2022. AANA designates this program as meeting the criteria for up to 2.00 CE Credits in pharmacology/therapeutics.

In addition, course attendees will be eligible to receive an additional 8 Class A CE credits by completing pre-course content, a course evaluation, and a post-test on course content. This portion of the program has been prior approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology for 8.00 Class A CE credits; Code Number 1041436; Expiration Date 2/9/2025.

Approximately three weeks prior to the course, participants will receive an electronic packet of content that includes the didactic curriculum for the course, a post-test, and evaluation of the course. Participants who complete this content are eligible for 8 CE credits, in addition to the 8 CE credits for actual attendance of the workshop and completion of evaluation.

Cadavers will be utilized for needling on cadaveric specimens, ultrasound instruction, administration of block medium, and catheter insertions. Workshop content will consist of classroom lectures, hands-on demonstration, “live” model scanning, and individualized instruction utilizing high faculty-to-attendee ratios.

The following blocks will be taught and demonstrated: PECs I/II, erector spinae, infraclavicular, serratus anterior, costoclavicular, RAPTIR, quadratus lumborum, TAP (iliohypogastric/ilioinguinal, transversalis, and posterior TAP), suprascapular (anterior and posterior approaches), and paravertebral nerve blocks. Advanced approaches to upper and lower extremity will also be taught, to include: axillary at the circumflex artery, distal upper/lower USGRA blocks, and anterior sciatic.

Anatomists from a local university (trained PhDs and DPTs) will be performing the dissection and instruction of the anatomy related specifically to regional anesthesia. Simultaneous explanations of sonoanatomy will coincide with the gross anatomic dissections. These anatomists will also teach neuromuscular assessment of nerves, mapping of nerve lesions, and documentation of these findings.
