Point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) is the use of ultrasound to assess, treat and trend patients at the bedside. In this manner, the delay in perioperative management is minimized compared to conventional imaging and assessment. PoCUS answers specific questions that narrow differentials, assists in decision-making and trends interventions. Clinical utility of PoCUS includes cardiopulmonary, airway, gastric and a myriad of perioperative uses which is comparable to the functionality of the stethoscope, ECG and chest x-ray combined. MTSA offers the resources and faculty to meet the educational needs of health care providers wanting to improve patient outcomes in health care using PoCUS technology.

Basic perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) as used by CRNA’s allows continuous monitoring and assessment of cardiopulmonary instability. Advanced perioperative TEE allows more robust assessment of hemodynamics as well as facilitates interventional cardiology and precise valve dimensions and function. This course offers a continuum starting with basic TEE and advancing through its use for interventional cardiology, electrophysiology and perioperative valve assessment. Extensive hands-on skill acquisition is offered along with podium presentations.
High-fidelity simulators will be used to demonstrate 20 standard transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) windows and 20 cardiac pathologies. Workshop content will consist of classroom lectures, hands-on demonstration, TEE window acquisition and individualized instruction. Additionally, qualitative and quantitative Doppler will be used to measure valve area, ejection fraction, valve stenosis and regurgitation, pulmonary artery stenosis and cardiac output.
Advanced and basic Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) training using state-of-the-art Heartworks simulators is provided during these hands-on workshops.
